  • Fresh, quick debriefing activities?

  • New strategies?

  • Kid friendly options?

  • Encourage individual ownership?

Debriefing Techniques & Tools

  • What's the point? Group, individual, etc.

  • What? So what? Now what?

  • Lightbulb, "ah-ha!" moments

  • Journaling

  • Stop light (Green is good, yellow is in-between, red is stop)

  • Paper with markers, play-doh, squishy body parts - use these items to reflect on your weekend.

  • Draw (find words without words) - this creates choice and allowed for own comfort level and interpretation

  • Debrief by Taste - "Think about driving here... the moment you left home, what food comes to mind?"

  • Ask follow up questions to inquire deeper about responses.

  • Ubuntu Cards (or Chi-Jui) - Use the single image side to create a picture that sums up the weekend.

  • Tell the story.

  • Having a "toolbag" where you place different learnings or "tools" into where you can pull from and reflect at the end of the day.

  • "Teamwork", "communication" are umbrella terms. Encourage deeper analysis by filling those buckets with more specifics.

High Elements

  • Celebrate successes of group

  • Frontload with "what do you want out of this?"

  • Immediate 1-on-1 debriefs after climbing

  • Have group circle about participants' emotions while climbing

  • Compare with how participant shares how they actually felt

  • Have the climber talk through the experience while climbing

  • Have a group intake form that gives the "why are you here" so you can front load with clear goals and expectations.

  • Question: Is having a group individually reflect on an experience and not share an effective debrief?
